Community Participation

My work is fuelled by an interest in achieving social, spatial and environmental justice through working with communities to find solutions – and test interventions – to tackle local challenges that have arisen through meaningful conversation.

After carrying out an undergraduate dissertation exploring space, place and identity in Deptford Market, I began working on participatory design projects for architecture and design studio make:good, I designed and implemented engagement strategies for urban design projects while at Publica, and supported Open Communities working with residents of a South London estate undergoing development.

Most recently, I led the engagement on a collaborative-design project for social enterprise Street Space, working with the community in Becontree Heath to make their area safer, greener and a more welcoming place for everyone to enjoy. Involving over 500 local people through pop ups, design workshops, large scale events and audits, we were able to understand the potential of a new public space in a central parking area, as well as street changes in another three locations. We also worked closely with over 100 school children in the area and their families to test a range of creative ideas for programming the space. Working with an urban designer, we delivered detailed concept designs in Spring 2021, with changes completed in Summer 2022.

You'll find images of participatory projects I've worked on below.
